Thanks so much for sharing this in such a poetic and moving way… That is so true, it’s important to ask ourselves what kind of story are we living… Amazing book called a million miles in a thousand years by Donald miller that I read recently that has ‘what kind of story are we living?’ as its theme…. The further I go through life the more convinced I am that all of our lives are telling different sides to the same story. We go through life judging people, talking about how everyone is different, but after a few drinks in a bar stool confessional most people will admit that we aren’t so different. We may not be addicted to drugs or alcohol, but everyone is addicted to something. We may not be struggling with same sex attraction, but everyone struggles with their sexuality. We may not be in a failing mariage, but everyone has craters where relationships used to be.

Good art, whether it be music, photography, or cinema, embraces this sameness. Good art tells one story that an audience can look at and say, “That isn’t just a story, that is my story.” The world needs more storytellers.

Taking time away from the usual is always good for the heart and soul.It refreshes you and keeps you grounded and you get time to think and re think about the path you are taking.To be able to re focus on what really matters,life is very precious and loved ones should always come first. I am not one of those that worships commercialism,I’m am very conscious of the ethics of where and how I buy any products. I have never been a tv watcher. Whenever I need to get away and think,I take myself off over the fields and woods,you are very lucky as you live in such a beautiful place in this Country.Never take anything for granted and always appreciate the smaller things in life.
As we get older our dreams,desire change and I think with you being back in touch with nature your intuition has kicked in,listen to them,have faith in them!
If you are so busy to notice the awesome beautiful nature around you it’s time to slow down and appreciate it.Otherwise you’ll burn out and lack inspiration!
And without being morbid 20 years ago I lost my first ever true love and this past week I have been arranging a reunion/celebration for him as he touched so many lives.Im making contact with people I had lost contact with and if Ade,was here now none of us would of lost contact.
There is not a day that goes past that I don’t miss him or think about him. I’ve also suffered from Thyroid disease and just getting my life back on track. I have thrown myself back into music as that was our passion,but I know Ade would frown upon my music taste as he was a Raver.
I guess my message is you are so lucky to have friends and family and Tim around you,please don’t take them for granted,love is precious,make time.

Its different for different people.. Everyone has their own way to recharge, to refresh and gain new perspective. For some its in nature, in the peace and quiet. For others its in the company of their friends and family. For others its in music/movies/books. Whatever your refreshing pool is, I agree its vital to take every opportunity to immerse yourself in it!!

Yes indeed, which is why I was down the pub listening to a local guy singing on Sunday night, not watching TV. He didn’t have the greatest voice – doubt he will ever be on TV – but bags of enthusiasm, a rapport with the audience, and so the confidence to take on songs he hadn’t really finished learning yet. I’d take a live performance like that over ANYBODY on appearing on TV (well, except Ashton Lane, of course Which reminds me how lucky I am living in a town where I can find live music in a local pub any night, Thurs to Sun, and a bunch of very talented local musicians that make the model work.

Thanks for being out there making live music, and I encourage everyone to get out as much as they can and support it!

Hi Lorna, thanks, interesting spin on it… I suppose thats true in lots of areas too that in these shows folk go from singing in their showers or at the local karaoke to singing live on national TV… not quite sure how they do it and handle the nerves! although i expect with the voice there is a higher percentage that are semi proffesional or are certainly more experienced!

The Voice is a but better put together show in my opinion to the X factor… For some reason the level of talent seems much higher, It doesn’t also seem to have the same emphisis on sniggering at contestants if they are not very good which is better than X factor… Great for TV: Terrible for music though in my opinion!

Hiya totally agree with you too. They are very entertaining but I really do feel for some of these contestants who do have genuine talent… You are right about the power of social media and if you have a tech savy contestant they should be able to use the bit of profile to their advantage once they are off the show, however those opportunites can slip by if you don’t leverage it at the right time. I also think the mentality of aspiring musicians needs to change too, ala by post about (SALM’s)… In my mind its not that healthy to be aiming at being a pop star, better to aim to contribute something worthwhile and of quality into the music sphere, if you do that, you will gather supporters along the way… thanks again for the post!

Hi Vicky, cheers for the great comment… To my shame I do find myself watching these shows, they are amazing TV, partly due to the fact you have these amazing singers making it a great show. You feel the bad side of it though as people are profiteering from both peoples talent and their dreams… Its the singers and contestants that make the show, to my knowlage they wont be paid in any way for appearing. They are chasing a dangling carrot in front of them and it’s all a bit of an illusion… Probably symptomatic too of our cultures desire for the 15 mins of fame thing too! Thanks for supporting and appreciating indie songwriters and singers, its tough for musicians at the moment… we all need SALMs!…

Hi Jez, thanks so much for the comment… I totally agree with you, it is all about making a great TV show, and not about music. I think things are really tough for musicians and it plays out when you see singers this good on these kinds of shows. There is a new music business model emerging, but its just that, emerging. It’s not fully formed yet, so lots of musicians are not sure which way to go… Interesting times! You are right too, I’ve known people to win the whole show and still have no career at the end of it, can you imagine that! going through week after week trauma performing on live TV to be criticized in front of the nation, win the whole thing then still to get dropped a few months later! not a good state of affairs!
